Remembering Jason Barnett

Published: July 9, 2020, 3:27 a.m.

On May 14,1997, Jason Barnett, accompanied by his mother, Connie, and his sister, Shawna, who was 8 1/2 months pregnant, were returning home from Liberal. Jason was scheduled to be an usher at the upcoming graduation, and they had made a quick trip to get supplies.

On that same day, a man named Tony was driving the opposite direction on the highway.
Tony was drunk. Tony was pulling a trailer. Tony didn't attach the trailer legally or safely.
When the cars met on a curve outside of Feterita Ks, the trailer came off and struck the Barnett vehicle.

Jason died. His unborn nephew, Zalan, also died.

The accident shook the town to the core. It especially effected me. Tony is my uncle (through marriage) and I blame him 100% for these deaths. I'll admit, I don't know the guy. Met up with him a few times at family gatherings.

This interview is important. Drinking and driving is never ok.
Listen in as I get to know Jason from the people who loved him most.
