Way 6: Feeding Your Imagination
At this point, you hopefully have a sense of your premise and how it fits into the drama genre. Now it’s time to feed your mind with inspiration.
“I steal from every movie ever made.” — Quentin Tarantino —
OBJECTIVE: To start the process of feeding your imagination with cinematic drama imagery and inspiration.
ADVICE: This process is all about finding seeds that you can implant into your mind and into your dramatic premise. You accomplish this by watching the dramas that are similar to yours, as far as drama subgenres and the themes explored. Before you scream “plagiarism,” know that this isn’t about directly stealing and ripping off movies. It’s about inspiration. It’s about finding a certain tone for a moment or story arc or action sequence or character. It’s about jump-starting that imagination of yours.
EXERCISE: Now is the time to take those movies that you’ve found that are similar to your dramatic premise and watch them. Find them on streaming channels, buy them for cheap at stores, check your local library, rent them through Netflix or if you happen to have the historical relics called video stores still in your area.
ASSIGNMENT: While watching those movies — and any others in additional drama subgenres — take notes. Jot down the little moments and visuals that resonate with you and your own premise. If you respond to visual aids more so, get a sheet of paper — or use any software — and draw a circle in the center with your logline in the middle. Then draw additional small circles with any of the characters that you’ve created while you fleshed out this concept for the synopsis you wrote. Connect them with lines. Now take the notes you’ve made from your movie viewings and connect them to the main premise, the characters, etc. This will begin to give your drama concept even more weight.
You can continue this process throughout this course and beyond. Keep watching movies and television shows in this genre to plant your brain with many creative seeds that you can use throughout the development and writing process.
