Way 4: Depth

Okay! You’ve taken a look at your 5 premises — or screenplays you’ve already written — and you have made sure that you’re not just writing your own version of movies you’ve seen. You have made sure that you’re not chasing a trend that has oversaturated the market. And you’ve done your research to make sure there’s nothing like your script out there today. You should now have your true 5 premises. Now we’ll be choosing the best of the bunch and developing it more.

“There's no such thing as simple. Simple is hard.” — Martin Scorsese —

OBJECTIVE: To flesh out your best drama concept and find more depth to the premise.

ADVICE: It can often be challenging to figure out exactly what makes a drama premise great. Sometimes it’s just sort of that intangible “something” that makes you laugh when you first hear it. Perhaps it’s very evocative and you can just instantly imagine it in your mind’s eye.

EXERCISE: It’s time to build on the drama concept you’ve conjured. Choose one drama concept to focus on and start by finding characters to throw into the mix. You can choose character types that are often found in comedies and create a hybrid of those types and ones that would fit your premise. Then begin to think in terms of beginning, middle, and end.

ASSIGNMENT: Your assignment today is to generate at least a paragraph outlining the actual premise for the concept you’ve chosen to focus on in this exercise and then find similar produced dramas.

Paul Theus is a respectable middle-class professor until his peaceful world is shattered as we find out from the first line: “No parent prepares for a child to be taken.

”Beware of strangers and watch out for the big bad wolf kids are told but what if a family unit is smoldered from within by a mother? Paul found the note that his wife was leaving for awhile tucked in a book about the Jon Bonet Ramsey child murder. The Bohemian mother Anne Theus inflames the threat posed by the idea that it takes the village court to raise a child.

Do the courts really act in the best interest of the children?

Parents plan for their children’s home, school, clothes, food, and happiness but once the Theus’ five-year daughter is kidnapped we are barraged by conflict for over three years until the terminal end. Is the terminal ending tragic or the only possible resolution to the conflict? You decide.
