The civil rights era might be American culture\u2019s most relentlessly mythologized decade, and nowhere has that been marketed more successfully when mythmaking our collective memory of music festivals. Woodstock has become a shorthand for the counterculture\u2019s zenith, Altamont for its nadir, while Monterey\u2014which featured superstars\u2014was arguably more important than either of the two. Now we have the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival documented in this new film.
