Josh (@joshuacliston) talks Kelly McGonigal’s book “The Willpower Instinct” (right from the back seat of his car). This episode is to wrap up some of the tangents Josh has been on (and probably never returned from) over the past few #BBTD episodes.
The research points to: (Kelly McGonigal PH.D.) uncovered the following findings that stood out to me:
• Willpower is one of the more taxing things your brain can engage in.
• John Baumeister’s research found that Willpower is like a muscle (or battery in my examples) – the more you use that willpower muscle (or battery) the less self control you have in your stores for other daily decisions.
• Sleep is thought to dramatically increases the charge in your willpower batteries (some replenishment of willpower can be achieved through more quality sleep).
• We need time to recover from the pursuit of self control – so give up on the idea of willpower perfection.
• Willpower is a biological instinct that everyone possesses – governed by the state of your mind and body. (It’s not a virtue of personal character trait that only awesome people posses).
• Lowering your stress levels may improve or at least not so heavily handicap our willpower reserves. (Getting active outdoors, sleep more, and reduce stress).
#willpower Assignment 1 (My Willpower Challenge).
- I Will: work out hard for 45-60mins per day.
- I Won’t: eat so much processed sugar and wheat products.
- I Want: to trim down and increase functional strength.
