Josh (@joshuacliston) talks about productivity and optimisation, and how obsessing over being productive might actually be making you less-happy. And Josh also talks about why we need to STOP punishing ourselves for our relaxation time.

Questions we ask:
- Why do we pride ourselves on little we sleep, how much we work, and productive we are.
- Are we building shadow-metrics into our lives to shield ourselves from our own lack of results.
- Do we need to stop focussing on being productive, and what can we be doing instead?

Why would being less productive actually make you happier?
- According to Sam Carpenter (author of Work the System) would say: the energy required in optimising the last 2% of anything is exponentially more difficult and resource intensive than optimising the first 98%.
- You may be able to stop retroactively punishing yourself for relaxing, and you may be able to re-frame relaxation as a purely positive experience.
- If your endeavour is artistic in nature, you might find that over-optimising the artistic process can steal some of the true value of making that art | creation “which is the labour and process involved.”

Why we must STOP punishing ourselves for relaxing!
- Relaxation has proven restorative properties for the body, and the mind.
- If you’re too focussed on being productive 24hrs per day, you might actually be failing to be present with those closest to you, and you may in fact be: a bad listener, a disengaged colleague, or even worse, a distracted lover.
- If you allow yourself to fully-relax during your aloted down-time, you may see substantial improvement in your overall effectiveness.
