It's A Trap!

If you're a Star Wars fan (which I'm not, not really) then you'll remember Admiral Ackbar's famous line, "it's a trap!" During his earthly ministry Jesus was entrapped - often by the Pharisees, sometimes along with the Herodians - so frequently that he must have seen it coming a mile away. In Mark's gospel (12:13-17) Jesus deals with the dilemma of whether Jews should pay taxes to Rome, which has implications for Christian interactions with the state government. But Mark wants to show us something even greater: that the wisdom of God in Christ is worthy of worship because it displays a deep authority beyond that of any mere human being.
