About the author: From 1972 to 1974, Alice Combs, a California native, attended Cal State Hayward, where she earned a place on the Dean\u2019s List. After a painful divorce, Alice took a variety of unrewarding jobs. Determined, however, to build financial security for herself and her two daughters, she chose to heed the advice of a business-savvy mentor: \u201cAsk your prospective customers what they need and can\u2019t get for themselves\u2014and then get it for them.\u201d

Alice discovered that her prospects were in need of a specialized type of wire, the kind that supermarkets and other businesses use to bind recyclable cardboard boxes into bales. The resourceful and determined Alice sought out sources of baler wire that she could buy and then resell at a small profit. Initially ignorant of the recycling business, she made all the predictable novice mistakes, and taking on a partner who turned out to be an embezzler, and hiring several employees who proved unreliable when she most needed them, didn\u2019t help.

Alice persevered through every obstacle; she taught herself to be an skilled entrepreneur and expert employer, and slowly developed her startup company, Vulcan Wire, into a thriving business. By Vulcan Wire\u2019s forty-fifth year it boasted $10 million in annual sales. She\u2019s now retired but holds a 27 percent interest in the company. Vulcan continues to thrive as a workplace where men aren\u2019t favored over women. \u201cThe man who\u2019s now Vulcan\u2019s CEO and president respects both equally\u2014after all, he got used to it, with me as his boss for fifteen years,\u201d Alice said.

Along the way, Alice also found the love of her life and married him. She and her husband live on Mendocino County\u2019s scenic north coast. One of her ongoing missions is to empower women to pursue careers in business.
