Bonus | Sea Stories for Wonder Ears & Sleepy Heads

Published: May 1, 2022, noon

Thank you for tuning in to a special, bedtime-friendly bonus episode of The Adventures of Power Dog in Dogland about falling in love with the sea! There’s no loud, be-bopping rock anthem or toe-tapping banjo fun in this episode. Instead, you’ll hear Phoebe’s “sleepytime” voice, soothing ocean waves, and gentle music. We even end the episode with a solid five minutes of ocean waves gently splashing on soft, silky sand.

And, as many listeners have requested, this is a story about Taffy, Power Dog’s first cousin, and Tuffy’s twin sister. We have sometimes referred to her as the bravest dog in all of Dogland, but a quality she has that we really admire is her curiosity. For this young pup who sat by the sea and who wondered — and for other puppies who wonder — What sea stories are yet to be told?

We explain what “zoomies” are, how water travels through the world to become part of the ocean, what is left when you dry out ocean water, and what salt and lime crystals look like under a microscope.

This story is based on the first part of a short and lovely book in the public domain called Sea Stories for Wonder Eyes by Mary Earle Hardy. You can hear the book read to you for free at Librivox.com- an incredible online catalog of free, public domain audiobooks read by volunteers from around the world. A note to grownups: because most of the books, short stories, and poems featured in Librivox are from around a century ago, some content may not feel suitable for your families to listen to and might be worth a preview before sharing with your younger people. Feel free to reach out via our many social channels or email if you want to discuss this further.

Special thanks to Anders Lund for helping us record this episode. And, thanks as well to the \xfcber-talented artists at Orange Free Sounds, who provide a robust library of music and sound effects for others to use. This episode was edited using the phenomenally easy & intuitive Descript App, which we wholeheartedly recommend. (Affiliate link benefits our show.)
