b'Forty-four percent of adults in the United States are reading and writing at a\\xa0fourth-grade\\xa0level. Nearly twenty percent of high school seniors graduated last year without knowing how to read.\\xa0Regardless of politics,\\xa0I think we can agree that\\xa0illiteracy is an enemy to liberty and an obstacle to bridging the gap between us and our fellow man. The White House has released its proposed budget for 2019 and it includes sizable reductions in federal funding for libraries and museums. Danielle A. Vann, national and international\\xa0award-winning\\xa0author of the\\xa0Whizbang\\xa0Machine young adult series of books, as well as numerous other titles, will join me to discuss the impact these proposed cuts would have on public libraries, public and charter schools, and public universities around the country.\\xa0

Parents are pulling their children out of public schools for a day to protest sex education that they say has become graphic, hedonistic and ideological under the influence of pro-choice and gay rights groups. The Sex Ed Sit Out started with parents in Charlotte, North Carolina, and has spread to nearly a dozen other cities in three countries. The April 23 protest is a grass-roots effort spearheaded by mothers who said they are disturbed by the "ographic" content that has made its way into the classroom. Elizabeth Johnston, a social conservative activist who blogs under the name Activist Mommy, is one of the protest\'s organizers and she will join me to talk about it.
