Promises for a New Year
Holy Spirit. Pastor Michael Dascoli
January 24, 2021

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11: 28

“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this He meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.” John 7:37b-39

"I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in
abundance [to the full, till it overflows].” John 10:10b amp

The source of the abundant life Jesus promised is Jesus Himself

The supply of the abundant life Jesus promised is the Holy Spirit

This is about a vertical connection that has horizontal effects

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:6-7

What Does This Abundant Life Look Like?

First: It’s about Jesus being with me forever

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” John 14:16-18

Action Step: Embrace the promise

Second: It’s about teaching me to know God and His plans

"All this I have spoken while still with you, but the advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you." John 14:26

“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” 1Corinthians 2:14

Action Step: Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you

“For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.” 1 Corinthians 2:11-12

Third: It’s about convincing me of my need for God

“…when He comes, He will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. 9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.”
John 16:8-11

Action Step: Practice embracing the presence of the Holy Spirit

Let’s Pray:
-What is God’s Spirit saying to you today?
-How must you respond?
