60 Seconds - Pride In Business and Cutting Corners

Published: June 25, 2020, 10 a.m.

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

I remember my dad standing with hands deep in his trouser pockets and shaking his head saying ruefully, “They just don’t make ‘em like that anymore.”

It’s what he said when he was looking for something, maybe a replacement part, a product, a service.

He was reflecting on a much earlier experience. His father and brothers worked in a porcelain factory. Back then they helped produce quality porcelain tableware. You knew it by the workmanship and the mark that went on each item.

Of course it was a different time; but at the end of the day my grandfather and uncles were helping to turn out ceramic tableware of superior artistic quality. "They just don't make 'em like that anymore."

Question: You own a company, a business. Think about the pride you feel in your service, your products, your employees. And consider where and how you might be cutting corners. Now what?
