Hagen was born in Berlin, and he has had long relationship with German directors and reached international attention with The Lives of Others and along The Young Victoria, and Papillon, for Michael Noer, starring Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek.

Hagen has worked on other acclaimed films over the years including Hilde and The Beaver\xa0for Jodie Foster, and Hotel Lux.

More recently, Hagen has been working as both Director and DP, on several projects including the television series Berlin Station\xa0 and the film, Prima Ballerina.
