William P. McGivern's serial in\xa0The Saturday Evening Post, published as a novel in 1953, was the basis for the screenplay, written by former crime reporter\xa0Sydney Boehm.

The film was selected for inclusion in the\xa0National Film Registry\xa0of the\xa0Library of Congress\xa0in 2011.
