We have been here before. Only back in the 1950's, it was the move from 6-volt to 12-volt systems. However even as EVs move from 400 volt to 800 volt systems, much of the reasoning is the same. In this case, it is to support a power-hungry vehicle infrastructure designed for performance, entertainment and creature comforts. Recharging times, range and battery space are also driving the move.
