Welcome to This Edition of RiversZen Today for Wednesday, October 24th, 2018
The news of the day: As promised in yesterday’s post about body blind spots, today we are addressing body issues caused by injury from all sources. We are not going to differentiate between issues created by an auto accident, from those created as the result of surgery or from those we have created through the practice of bad posture over decades. Bottom line, your body has been compromised. You are probably aware of some kind of event; but, have not actively followed the progress of your body’s transition from the onset to your current uncomfortable, painful or agonizing status. You may sit there wondering how and why you hurt or ache or crunch, as the case may be. What happened, you may ask, knowing full well you know the answer?
We go through our days oblivious to the awkward and damaging positions we force our body to endure each day as we sit, drive, work, play and accomplish our daily tasks. We place children on one hip as we multi-task. We drive and sit at our desk for hours in very uncomfortable positions. Many of our jobs require us to maintain body positions that are anything but supportive or comfortable. We engage in sports as weekend warriors. These things can happen over years.
In my five decades of driving I have been rear ended four, maybe five, times. I tore my ACL in a skiing accident in 1984. I forced by body to sit day in and day out for decades as I had a desk job as a banker and later as a tax accountant. Many times when not at my desk, I was driving. Compensation and adaptation in support of my right knee ultimately led to sciatic pain down by left leg and eventually the development of a bunion on the big toe of my left foot. All during those decades I was wearing four inch heels. Which of those various factors resulted in my overall pain and suffering . . . the auto accidents, the skiing accident, the years of sitting . . . the four inch heels. I’m sure all of them were responsible for my various issues. Even so, one day I looked and all of a sudden, I had a bunion. Gosh, what a surprise. My left foot had been in immense pain for years. Did I change anything about my life? No! Had I quit wearing four inch heels? No! So why was I surprised. Because, we are so busy going through life we don’t think about the affect our daily behavior has on the structure of our body. Think about your own body. Can you follow the path and figure out why you have some of the body blind spots you experience every day?
