b'Welcome to This Edition of RiversZen Today for Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018

The news of the day: As I shared yesterday, our topic of the week is body blind spots. A succinct description would be to use the phrase coined by one of my mentors, Jill Miller, who defines them as areas of the body which are overused, underused, misused, abused or confused. We all have them. We often times just don\\u2019t know it. But, what if you have known about your body blind spot for years. Maybe you were injured or have a body malformation you have dealt with since you were a child such as scoliosis or kyphosis which are both curvatures or deformities of the spine. We will talk about injuries tomorrow.

Scoliosis goes side to side while kyphosis is a forward curvature. These conditions can be congenital, meaning they appeared at birth, or they can be postural or structural. Do you have bad posture or does your body have various deformities causing the vertebrae to round? Years ago, one solution was to insert a stainless steel implant referred to as a Harrington rod along the spinal column which was attached by way of a hook at the top and bottom of the curve to treat the instability and deformity of the spine. This method was popular from the early 60s through the late 90s. However, years down the road the unforgiving nature of the rod created more problems than originally thought and use of the rod was discontinued.

That was then this is now? What if you have a rod having grown up during that time or you have been diagnosed with scoliosis or kyphosis. If it is postural, exercise is the best answer to improve the situation and should not take a long time to bring relief. If it is structural, as long as you have defined your limitations with your doctor, exercise is certainly the more user-friendly approach as an alternative to surgery. If exercise does not provide relief, you can always have surgery down the road. This is a tough body blind spot to address because you may be in pain and you have worked around it for years afraid to aggravate the situation. Relief can happen. The key is slow, deliberate work. Start with small motions for short periods of time. Don\\u2019t force. Try using heat along with self-massage with therapy balls coupled with range of motion flexing and extending of the spine. If you are dealing with these issues you might want to schedule a session with a trainer to find the options which might work best for you.

Please share on Facebook at our RiversZen Online Community what you have found most effective for dealing with your blind spots. As always, you can also email your questions or comments to info@riverszen.com or text or call 503-440-3554.
