We spend our days mentally measuring two metres. When we need something more accurate, we use a ruler or a tape measurer. Strangely, when we measure the length of our coastline, we have to take into account the length of the "ruler". This observation takes us into a world of fractals, butterfly wings and measuring weather patterns and climates. Caveats anyone?
