Unlike popular perception, Backgammon is not a game of chance.  It requires a skilled player to assess the equity value of their position.  One aspect of estimating the chance of winning is to understand the sequence of events that has to go the way of the of player.  This sequence or parlay is common in sports betting.  In the current perception around covid-19 and the wearing of masks, people do not measure the probability of each segment in the parlay of contact leading to death.  Hence the hysteria.
