Standing with Others

There is an old Sunday School song that goes “The B-I-B-L-E, yes that’s the book for me, I stand alone on the Word of God, the B-I-B-L-E!” It’s very catchy, and helpful when learning how to spell “Bible.” The middle of the song, though, says, “I stand alone on the Word of God.” The songwriter wanted us to know that, as Christ-followers, we should consider the Bible alone to be our foundation of truth. However, the line kind of makes it sound like we are standing by ourselves on the Word of God. In reality, I’ve found that just reading the Bible by myself isn’t always enough; sometimes I need help to understand what the Bible says. That’s when I look to smart, godly people to stand alongside me. That’s what the Ethiopian eunuch did, as we read in the book of Acts. Philip found him reading Isaiah. Philip asked if he knew what he was reading, and the man responded, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” Then, Philip told him the good news about Jesus. The Bible is full of wisdom and truth, but it can be hard to understand. That is why we should learn and study in communities full of godly people who cherish God’s Word, often scholars and writers who spend their lives researching ancient languages and cultures. Standing with others on the Word of God will only make our understanding of Christ deeper and richer. Then, we can share what we learn with others who are desperate to understand the truth and joy of Jesus.              This is Luis Palau.
