\nRadioRotary\ninterviews Laura Lane, Poughkeepsie program coordinator for Literacy Connections\nof the Hudson Valley. Literacy Connections uses a state-approved tutoring program\nwith trained volunteers to help adults gain reading skills and to tutor immigrants\nwho have poor or no English. The\nservices of Literary Connections are free; the organization is supported by\ndonations from individuals, foundations, and government agencies.\xa0 Although\nthe program works all year long, the highlight of the year comes with the annual\nSpelling Bee at Marist College, a competition for high-school students and\nadults; sponsors for the Spelling Bee contribute to the funds that has kept the\nprogram going more than 45 years. Functional illiteracy is more than just\ninability to read words--literacy\nis\xa0 the ability to understand, evaluate,\nuse, and engage with written texts in ways enabling a person to participate in\nsociety, achieve that person\u2019s goals, and develop his or her knowledge and\npotential.\xa0 It includes the skills needed\nto fill out forms and read instructions, not just to read or write and\nunderstand a sentence.
