Welcome to episode #185! This week, Matt and Braden talk with Mark, who went through Pure Freedom Journey and 1:1 Coaching with Matt. Mark's story of redemption is incredible.

Abuse and neglect at a young age

Mark was physically and sexually abused as a child, both of which confused him. The sexual abuse was a violation, but because it felt good, he was left confused wondering about who and what he was attracted to. His father was not complimentary or loving towards him, but would instead try to make Mark like things he didn't enjoy or excel at - and then he would follow that up by putting Mark down.

Arrested at 35

Mark was arrested at 35 years old while living in a small town with a professional occupation. His arrest was due to voyeurism as he tried to look for situations that mirrored the abuse and same-sex sexual encounters he had as a young child. The abuse in his childhood years was the only place he felt comfort or accepted, so in seeking those things, he crossed legal lines and put others at risk. Because of this, he lost everything in his life and had to start fresh in another town.

Jesus redeems

At 50 years old, Mark experienced the love of God in a new way and started realizing why he did the things he did. It led to healing from shame and self-condemnation and in place, the love of God was able to reside in his heart in a new way. God opened doors for him to get support from places like Restored Ministries and then start sharing his story publicly. When he was a child, he witnessed someone being abused and always carried guilt for not doing anything to stop it. Recently, he was praying for that person and they reached out to have a meal together. Mark initiated a conversation that was healing for both of them.
