152. Are Ungodly Vows Keeping Me Stuck in Porn?

Published: March 29, 2023, noon

Welcome to episode #152! This week, Matt and Braden talk about the impact that godly and ungodly vows have on our lives and on our journeys to living porn-free.

Vows can be good or bad
When we get married, we make a vow to commit to our spouse for life. On the flip side, we can make negative vows that keep us stuck outside of God's will for our lives. Vows will impact our lives, other people around us, and people in the generations to come so we need to be very aware and intentional when speaking words of life or death that will carry us in a direction for the rest of our lives or until we change course.

Ungodly vows make generational impacts
In the book of Judges, Jephthah makes an ungodly vow because of undealt with trauma in his own life. Instead of trusting God to carry out what God was going to carry out, he made a vow to try to twist God's arm into making him a success. God was interested in his prosperity anyway, but because Jephthah didn't live in faith and instead made a vow that God didn't want him to make, his daughter was killed and he would have suffered in great distress.

Be careful and slow to make vows to God
Deuteronomy 23:21-23 says: \u201cWhen you make a vow to the Lord your God, you shall not delay to pay it, for it would be sin in you, and the Lord your God will surely require it of you. However, if you refrain from vowing, it would not be sin in you. You shall be careful to perform what goes out from your lips, just as you have voluntarily vowed to the Lord your God, what you have promised."

We should always be careful to make a vow to God that we won't carry out. God will sometimes stop us from making a vow that isn't from Him, but if we do make the vow, we need to make sure we're going to carry it out.
