Welcome to episode #127! Matt and Braden are joined by Samye Flock and Jayme Davis of Reflection Ministries to discuss human trafficking and pornography.
Human Trafficking isn't like what it is seen in the movies!
Often when we think of trafficking, we think of kidnapping and images of Liam Neeson saving his daughter in Taken. But in reality trafficking is much broader and nuanced, and it runs in more subtle ways. Coercion and manipulation are much more utilized approaches to controlling people and often "romantic" relationships can be the means by which traffickers dominate their victims.
The digital world and trafficking
Today with the advancement of social media, people can be easily manipulated and led down a bad path, where they are coerced and blackmailed to provide sex or images that profits traffickers. This has led to trafficking becoming a massive "industry", that brings in billions upon billions of dollars every year.
The link between porn and trafficking
Samye mentioned that porn creates the demand for trafficking as it is an addiction that can lead to more and more advanced behaviour, until a consumer desires to buy sex. Traffickers provide the supply to that demand, and that is just one aspect to the deep connection that runs between the two. Often the porn that is produced is created using coercion and manipulation, preying upon the needs of desperate men and women. Samye mentioned that until we deal with the porn problem, trafficking wont go away.
