Q&A: Ectopic Pregnancy

Published: Dec. 6, 2017, 8:30 a.m.

When you get pregnant the egg is fertilized and then should implant in the lining of the uterus, which is necessary for the egg to survive and grow. An ectopic pregnancy happens when the egg attaches somewhere else. The most common place outside of the uterus this happens is in the fallopian tube, sometimes these are called tubal pregnancies. It is more rare, but also possible for the egg to implant in the ovary, cervix, in your abdomen or in the scar from a previous cesarean birth. This episode responds to a listener request for information on an ectopic pregnancy with causes, risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, how this can affect future fertility, and coping with loss.
