A police chief was found guilty of murder--his sentence? 4 years! Hey everybody, Welcome to Peace News Now, your daily journal of peaceful resistance! I’m DerrickJ. Today’s Saturday, November 30th 2013. 1 ounce of silver is 20 dollars. 1 Bitcoin is 1100 dollars. This episode is brought to you by friends of http://WeUseCoins.com . This Thanksgiving, as you celebrated life by eating Turkey with family, some Americans sipped eggnog as they remotely operated drones, dropping bombs on people’s homes. On Thanksgiving. The bombs blew up a child, reportedly three years old, and wounded two women. It’s unclear whether the target was hit, or who the target even was. A spokesman for President Karzai of Afghanistan stated, quote, “[The Americans] give no importance to the life of civilians. They are killing civilians like flies. [Bombing a home] should have been a red line for them… Even if he was an insurgent they shouldn’t have fired on the house.” The same people who did the bombing are also in charge of investigating it for any wrongdoing. That is a clear conflict of interests.

This week a church went to the park to feed the homeless, intending to teach their children about the true meaning of Thanksgiving. The park’s growing homeless population were thankful for the warm meal and comforting prayers. Unfortunately, a park ranger, quote, “just following orders” soon approached the group and demanded they leave for violating an alleged city ordinance. The church group peacefully ignored the demand and finished handing out the rest of their meals.
After being confronted by reporters, the park ranger declined to comment, admitting quote, “I can’t talk to you. My bosses don’t want me to talk.” According to the law enforcer, who had to radio supervisors to learn the ordinance he was enforcing, feeding the homeless was not permitted by a “large group.” If the large group were stampeding over each other for the latest Black Friday deals, that’s okay. But sharing the spirit of Thanksgiving? Illegal! Do you think “following orders” is a valid excuse to take food away from the hungry?

Need more proof that these government types are out of touch with the rest of humanity? Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is famous for his poor treatment of prisoners. He’s particularly proud of his economical meals, which cost from 15 to 40 cents each. Despite this low cost, in March, he announced plans to charge inmates $1 for their meals, of which they only get two per day. Inmates who refuse to sing the national anthem and pledge to the flag must subsist on bread and water alone. Arpaio tweeted this year’s Thanksgiving menu, bragging of its 56 cent cost. Apparently the people of Arizona just love that because they have re-elected Arpaio for over 20 years.

In a related story, an emotional new ad campaign from Amnesty International asks its viewers to stomach a hard truth. They show images of the last meals of American prisoners who were wrongly executed. What does a person ask to eat when he’s about to be killed for a crime he didn’t commit? It’s a clever way to get Americans to look at an uncomfortable reality that they’d rather ignore: their government kills innocent people. In most of the incidents, the cops had lied.

In other news, this week Police Captain Randy Harrison was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter. During an arrest, Randy shot 18-year-old Dane Scott in the back. The jury ruled that he was under no threat when he killed the teenager. The Police Captain was sentenced to 4 years for the murder. Some say 4 years is too light a sentence for murder, but Randy’s lawyer says it’s too harsh. Do you think the police captain’s status as a high-ranking government official had any impact on his sentencing?
