Luke 13:24-27

What would be the worst thing that you could hear from someone? As a parent you might think ‘oh hearing that my child has cancer or a terminal illness.’ As a spouse you might think ‘hearing that my spouse is being unfaithful and is leaving me.’ Maybe it could be economic ruin that would terrify you. Hearing that all of your investments, all of your money, is just gone. What would be the worst thing that you could possibly hear?

All of those things, as terrible as they are, still only dealing in the realm of earthly life. Jesus in Luke Chapter 13 teaches us the worst things that we could possibly hear from God.

He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able. Once the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, you will begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, open for us!’ He will tell you in reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ And he will say, ‘I don’t know where you come from. Depart from me, all you evildoers.’ (Luke 13:24-27)

The worse words that you could possibly hear from anyone would be Jesus saying ‘I don't know you or where you come from.’ The people that hear that voice will be cast out from his presence. They will not receive the benefit of his life, death, and resurrection. But they are not the words that Jesus wants you to hear.

He wants you to come to Him in faith trusting that through his life, death, and resurrection all of your sins are forgiven. He wants you to know that he loves you and is working all things for your good. To those who trust in Him Jesus will say ‘come blessed of My Father receive the kingdom which is prepared for you.’

Jesus wants you to be with Him forever in heaven. That is why He was willing to die. And that is why one day He will come and take you body and soul to be with Him forever. May God prepare you for that day so that you hear those great words that Jesus loves you and you will be with him forever in heaven. To him be the glory. Amen.
