When I was young, we were a family of four living in a small\n apartment. At the time, especially as a teenager, I bemoaned\n my lot in life and wished I lived in a far grander home like a\n few of my friends.

\n My mother fancied herself a philosopher. She read Lin\n Yutang and Richard Needham of the Toronto Globe and Mail.\n My father was an army guy, a vet who lived for hockey and\n football. My mother had no one with whom she could discuss\n the issues of the day until I came along. Newspaper in hand,\n she would come at me as I was getting dressed to go out and\n play and begin by saying, \u201cThis is quite interesting\u2026\u201d Then...\n
