20-year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother and then opened fire at the elementary school; killing 20 first-graders and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012, before shooting himself.
At the time, it was known as the second deadliest school shooting in US history; next to the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech, in which a gunman killed 32 students and teachers before committing suicide.
