I am FIRED UP for today's episode about what hormonal birth control ACTUALLY DOES to your body! First off, I want to preface by saying I of course believe there is a time and place for hormonal birth control & that we need access to it!
But I ALSO believe we need INFORMED CONSENT about what the pill is ACTUALLY doing to our bodies. I believe doctors need to recommend NATURAL treatments (that actually HEAL the problem) BEFORE turning towards birth control as a “fix all” approach.
Birth control DOES NOT HEAL acne, PCOS or IRREGULAR periods. It puts a BANDAID on it!
I also am NOT SAYING to just stop your birth control pill. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT. If you are interested in transitioning off I recommend talking to your doctor or working with someone to help you transition off so you have less negative side effects. Here’s what we dive into today:
A problem with the pill is that you aren’t getting a crucial piece of information about your overall health. Your period is not just your period. It’s a vital sign of your underlying health. It’s like a monthly report card that you’re missing out on when you’re on the pill because you don’t get an actual period when you’re on the pill! It’s SUPPRESSES OVULATION. It completely turns it off!
The communication from your brain to your ovaries so you’re not getting an actual period. It’s not a bleed that comes after ovulation like it would if you weren’t on the pill and you were getting an actual period. It’s a withdrawal bleed from the drugs that stimulate your uterine lining to shed but shut down your ovaries.
A pill bleed is about the dosing of a drug not about the health of your period or your overall health. When you’re on the pill you have no sex hormones of your own. You have steroid drugs given to you as a kind of hormone replacement. They are not the same as your own estrogen and progesterone.
You’re not making progesterone on the pill because you’re not ovulating. You have a synthetic form of progesterone called progestin in birth control but is does not give you the benefits that our own progesterone gives, such as: improving brain health and cognition, supporting your mood, bones, thyroid, muscles and metabolism.
Birth Control is proven to increase anxiety and depression! How it affects your mood is it makes your nervous system more sensitive to stress and also changes the structure of your brain.
