Intro\n\nWho owns your photos once you upload them to \u201cfree\u201d sites such as Facebook or Google Photos?\n\nRandy rattles off some stats and goes to bed.\n\nFacebook\n\n1.59 Billion log into Facebook each day. \u2013 Out of all of those Facebook Profiles, there are 83 million fake ones \u2013 Hacking your aunt\u2019s account, creating a clone profile and trying to add you as a friend. 300 Million photos are uploaded each day. \nSource: https://zephoria.com/top-15-valuable-facebook-statistics/ \nWho owns those photos that you voluntarily upload to sites such as Facebook and Google Photos?\n\nYou do.\nHow-To Geek did a write-up on this a couple of years ago and boiled it down to:\n\n\u201c\nFacebook gets a \u201cnon-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license\u201d to your photos.\n\nTo sum up, this all means that:\n\nFacebook doesn\u2019t own your content, you do.\nFacebook\u2019s terms of service sound scary but really aren\u2019t.\nYour privacy settings control how Facebook uses your photos.\n \u201c\n\nClosing Remarks\n\nThe main thing to keep in mind for all of these \u201cFree\u201d products is the phrase that you\u2019ve probably already heard\u2026something along the lines of: \u201cIf the product is free, then you\u2019re the product\u201d.\n\nThink about that: Online companies like Google earn their money from ADVERTISING! Also know that they suck up any data they can like a massive vacuum, growing this advertising beast exponentially. If Google (and Facebook) know everything about everybody (it\u2019s getting to the point where it\u2019s hard to avoid them), they can advertise to you very efficiently.
