People of all ages are concerned about fake news, misinformation and disinformation spreading online and what social media sites like Facebook and Instagram do with our data. Algorithmic bias has caused increased polarization and violence in our country, but what can be done about it? We discuss this issue and possible solutions with Executive Director of the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) Michelle Ciulla Lipkin. As a professor of media literacy at CUNY Brooklyn College, she provides some practical tips such as lateral reading to cross-check potential biases from even the most famous news sources. Her suggestions encourage us to empower ourselves through actively diversifying our newsfeed, and to question the persuasive production techniques used in the storytelling we consume. We even critically analyze the merits and issues with the Netflix documentary \u201cThe Social Dilemma\u201d (a good example of agreeing to disagree). Despite the lack of a nationally mandated curriculum on media literacy, organizations such as NAMLE and Media Literacy Now are doing great work to educate kids, adults and seniors on these important topics.
