This may not seem to be a question with a real answer. Most people treat people the same. We do not trust them, but we do not assume they are career criminals. But there is an answer. It both justifies, to some degree, the conventional response we have when meeting a stranger, and provides an answer to the question of who we can trust. There is a group of people who can be trusted and at the very least it ought to be questioned if you are among them.
