Democracy is the best of all possible options is a phrase that is true relative to the options considered. Such broad-based comments say more about the person making the statement than reality. Democracy is better than autocracy but saying this opens the door to the question of whether there are other ways of combatting and avoiding autocracy. Surely, no modern nation supports fascism but then we ought to ask whether the issue is even about politics and the best political system, or something else entirely. Democracy might be the best political system ever, and still not be a desirable solution to the problems that beset us. In short, is a political solution to our social problems even possible? The author suggests democracy fails not because other political responses are better, but because there is no political solution possible to humanities social problems.
