Most people if pressured would agree mankind exists for a purpose, whether known or unknown and, they would agree human beings have rights. If pushed further no doubt they would admit that beside rights men have duties. The problem with this conventional and widespread position is that having a purpose is not consistent with having rights and to have rights is not compatible with having duties. A duty might be considered the same as a purpose, but duties are more likely to be monitored and defined by other human beings than a purpose is. Duties are not compatible with a purpose given to us by God and integral to our very being. Rights give people authority they were never meant to have. The right to be happy becomes the right to take drugs which becomes the right to get drugs even if it means alienating other people\u2019s property rights. Then the right to escape punishment becomes the right to kill those who are attempting to hinder their right to escape justice.
