The nation seemed one of the highpoints of western civilization but like so much that arose from liberalism the good things are largely an illusion. It was conceived of as an effective way to protect subjects from the predation of other nations. But of course, were there no nations this argument would make less sense. What we rarely look at is the cost of electing a despot to the most powerful position in the state. Governments are elected on their ability to protect our freedoms, but they appear to remove far more freedoms than they can protect, especially when the thing they are protecting us from is another government identical to them.
