A hate crime is a type of crime that turns a run of the mill act of violence into something especially odious. Robbery to support a drug habit is socially acceptable, robbery to hurt a group that has protected status, is an attack on the social order. The state wants the rapist to simply rape women because they have been objectified, not because they are Black or Muslim. Common assault is understood. Things happen, emotions get the better of us. But to assault someone because they have on the clothes of a particular minority or the skin tones of a darker race, that is something society cannot tolerate. But hate is as much in the eye of the beholder as anywhere else. If we can hate the hater with such unbridled passion, hate itself is not wrong. It is wise to look at just where it is directed and by whom.
