On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of suffring and shame
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown.

Sermon Point #1 - Atonement - To cover over someone’s debt

Sermon Point #2 - God’s love and grace is evident throughout Scripture

Sermon Point #3 - God made a way for us to not have to pay for our own sins

Leviticus 17:11 - NLT - for the life of the body is in its blood. I have given you the blood on the altar to purify you, making you right with the LORD. It is the blood, given in exchange for a life, that makes purification possible.

Sermon Point #4 - Jesus was the perfect sacrifice to atone for our sins

1 John 2:2 - NLT - He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.

1 Peter 2:24 - “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

2 Corinthians 5:21 - God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Hebrews 9:12 - With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.
