The primitive yet sophisticated response that our brains have to trauma may be the link in understanding addictive behavior. The link between the feeling I have when I decide to use, act on my compulsion is stronger than simple brain chemistry. The feeling, decision, similar-same mechanism in the brain is WHY the chemical reaction is so strong...it is not linked to simple pleasure but to survival. (The "similar-same" concept is taken from the ground breaking book "Breaking Addiction" by Dr. Lance Dodes).
