Message Summary: In Genesis 15, God promises Abram that he will have more descendants than stars in the sky. But nothing happens – Abram and his wife don’t have children. So, Sarai takes matters into her own hands and has Abram sleep with her maidservant, Hagar. Hagar gets pregnant and Sarai mistreats her. Hagar runs away, and encounters an angel of the Lord in the wilderness. The Lord calls Hagar by name and asks her where she’s been and where she’s going. God then instructs her to return to Sarai and talks to her about her future son, Ishmael, promising that he will be like a wild donkey. Hagar gives God a new name – You are the God who sees me. Hagar has the strength and confidence to return to the very situation she ran from because of her encounter with God.
