Minister Coveney is also the Deputy Leader of Fine Gael and has previously served as Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government and as Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine. He was first elected to D\xe1il \xc9ireann in 1998, and also served for three years as a Member of the European Parliament for the Ireland South Constituency, from 2004 until 2007.
