Rohany Lan: From Child Refugee to Adult Entrepreneur

Rohany was born in 1978 in the midst of the khmer rouge regime in Cambodia to a Muslim family during which many of her extended family members were killed because of their religion. In order to survive, her family had to conceal their identity as they were not allowed to practice their religion in their country. At the peak of the genocide that exploded during that era, Rohany’s mother lost 3 children due to starvation and promoted them to seek refuge.

After her family escaped the brutal genocide in 1979, they fled to a refugee camp in Thailand which housed 160,000 Cambodian refugees.

After a year at the camp, they were granted immigration status to the United States and were placed in a housing community with other refugees in Santa Ana California in 1980.

Rohany grew up in the Pacific Northwest where she strived to find a balance between her family’s story of survivors and her identity as a Muslim Asian-American woman.

Rohany spent the last two decades raising her family with her husband, and dedicated herself to homeschooling her son and daughter in Olympia, WA.

Today Rohany works independently as a professional virtual assistant and provides a sense of organizational branding to all of her clients through her entrepreneurial training. Rohany’s motivation, resilience, and positive outlook on life are reflected in her personal and professional relationships.
