Passion Thursday - Remembering the Last Supper

Published: April 6, 2023, 11 a.m.

We are still exalting Passion Week, aka Holy Week, and today is Passion Thursday, also known as Maundy Thursday.  Maundy Thursday is the name given to the day Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, known as the Last Supper. Two important events are the focus of Maundy Thursday.

The word Maundy is derived from the Latin word for “command.” The “Maundy” in “Maundy Thursday” refers to the command Jesus gave to the disciples at the Last Supper, that they should love and serve one another.

The Last Supper is what we call the last meal Jesus ate with His disciples before His betrayal and arrest. The Last Supper is recorded in the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 26:17–30; Mark 14:12–26; Luke 22:7–30). It was more than Jesus’ last meal; it was also a Passover meal. One of the important moments of the Last Supper is Jesus’ command to remember what He was about to do on behalf of all mankind: shed His blood on the cross, thereby paying the debt of our sins (Luke 22:19).
