Black History-Slavery & The Bible

Published: Feb. 9, 2021, 11 a.m.

As we bask in the ambiance of black history month, I wanted to set the record straight.  Believe or not we have some who have turned from the bible deeming that the bible ordained oppression and was a advocate for slavery. Today’s message is a reboot of a sermon I did almost a year ago, but still a very necessary message, because as we all know Satan will do anything to keep people from truth, for truth is destructive to his Kingdom.

First and foremost the slave system we know and have read about in American history is not the initial slave system that started in biblical times.  The original slave system involved those who volunteered themselves and in some cases their entire families to servanthood, to assure all their needs were provided for.  There were physicians, lawyers, and other professionals we deemed as prestigious today who lived with rich families, or royalty as servants.

Then there was no penitentiary system in biblical times, so if some wronged another or stole from another, the penalty was that they worked off their debt and the applicable penalty.

If you notice in the bible you will never see the term employee or employer, only slave and slave master, slave was also synonymous with servant.  But if you study all the bible put in place regarding the management of the slave system you will see that the Word of God did not condone the oppression that enslaved our ancestors.  The mandate of God actually was opposed to any kind of oppression and was in fact influential in the establishing of the labor laws and even credit and finance regulations in place today that benefit employees and consumers  .

Here are a just few highlights of what the bible says about slavery

  1. If serving as a slave to pay off debt, maximum time is 7 years, hence today’s credit dismissal.
  2. The mandate of God says that slaves are to be treated like members of the slave masters family.
  3. The bible declares slaves were not permitted to held against their will
  4. The word of God also says if slaves were to be released for any reason they were to be released with all their possessions and gifts from the flocks, crops and wine of their masters, hence the onset of the unfulfilled 40 acres and a mule.
  5. Slave were also allowed religious freed, hence we now have a no discrimination law as part of our labor laws today.
  6. God deemed that masters were to be held accountable and punished for the mistreatment of a slave.
  7. If a slave ran away, they were not to be captured and returned
  8. The bible also speaks against kidnapping and forcing another into slavery

All of these stipulations regarding the slavery system according to the mandate of God.  But today with the full bible accessible to us, we as a people  still hold  true to the slave bible the oppressors and violators of the Word of God issued our ancestors.

God is still God, always was and always will be loving, care, compassionate and full of grace and mercy, but unfortunately who God is has never and will never keep those who are full of greed, prejudice, hatred, elitism, selfishness, a love of money, and power from disobeying the Word of God.

You all have heard me say this over and over, you would never settle for a relationship with someone where all the communication with that person comes through another, so why do we do that with God.  Get to know Him for yourself.  If we don’t stand committed to establishing a personal relationship with God, we end up not knowing God, his purpose, or the depth of his grace and mercy first had which leave gateways open for us to fall prey to the tricks of Satan and turn our backs on the only one who can save our souls, who is the very one who created us.  We have been screaming Black Live Matters, let me inform you that black awareness matters and your understanding of the Word of God Ma
