Ep 049 - Comedian - Jamie Alcroft

Published: July 17, 2019, 1:54 p.m.

Jamie Alcroft has been a silversmith, morning show DJ, and comedian, but currently spends a fair amount of time as an advocate for organ donorship. After a heart and liver transplant he began to write about his experiences in the hospital, this became the book The Tin Man Diaries. Michael goes into some of his qualms spiritual and otherwise, with organ donation - there’s a lot of back and forth about balancing the moral and emotional weight of the topic.

After a technical hiccup, the pair go into the mechanics of stand-up - the nature of timing, pacing, reading and re-reading an audience. This develops into a conversation on the more social value of comedy, the ability to suck the seriousness and grandeur out of some topics and force us all to confront the silliness of the human experience.

The way Jamie has gone about both advocating for organ donorship and comedy, as an exercise in presenting the truth and letting people realize the situation in a new light, the discussion moves to changing minds and how he’s changed his mind over his life on certain topics.

Our episode slides to its conclusion with a chat about breaking up a creative enterprise amiably, his daughter’s own path to advocacy, and recommendations for a Netflix series and a downtown sushi place.
