At the beginning of worship services you will often hear said, “we begin worship in the name of God the Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit”, and then the sign of the cross is made over the worshipping community. This part of the service is known as the invocation and many Christians will then make the sign of the cross upon themselves as well. Then at the close of worship you will hear the Aaronic blessing (benediction), from Numbers 6. These elements were used as a reminder to the worshipping community that as we enter worship, and as we leave worship, we do so as One People sharing in God’s One Voice speaking over us that His favor and blessing is with us now and always.
