S2E2: Why Fostering is an LGBTQ+ Issue, with FosterClub

Published: Oct. 27, 2021, 10 a.m.

b'It\'s almost November, National Adoption Awareness month, so this episode we\'re talking about where adoption often starts in the U.S.; the foster care system. Fostering and fostering-to-adopt are some of the main ways gay, bi and trans men choose to form their families. With so many older youth in the foster care system identifying as part of the LGBTQ+ community, we all have a responsibility to care for and support these queer foster kids.

This episode, GWK Executive Editor David Dodge talks to Angel Petite, Senior Policy Manager at FosterClub, and former foster youth and FosterClub \'Lived Experience Leaders\' Ernesto Olivares (he/him) and Izzy Moncada (they/them,) about how gay dads and dads-to-be can support older LGBTQ+ foster kids. They also discuss ways to support LGBTQ+ foster youth as a non-foster parent, including being a mentor, and supporting the proposed Chafee Extension Bill, which would continue to provided funds for older foster youth during the pandemic.
