A stroke can happen to anyone at any moment, but the effects can last for a lifetime. What determines whether and to what degree a person will recover from deficits brought about by a stroke? What’s happening in the brain when months or even years after a stroke, a patient begins to see functional improvement? These are the types of questions that guide Dr. Svetlana Pundik’s work on a daily basis. As a stroke neurologist, Dr. Pundik sees patients in the acute stages of stroke—just minutes and hours after having an event. But in her lab, she’s focused on the long-term recovery process and on understanding how a patient might achieve better coordination, a greater ability to walk, or increased limb movement even after years of seeing no improvement at all.

She joins the podcast today to discuss a number of important and interesting topics, such as the difference between the two primary types of strokes, how to identify signs of stroke, the time sensitivity of treatment for stroke, and what needs to happen in the future of stroke rehabilitation.
