\nThere is this famous interchange between two characters on the animated series The Simpsons that points to a piece of Wisdom from our tradition. It goes like this:
\nHomer Simpson: Flanders, why did you call the cops last night?
\nNed Flanders: I had to — I heard a hubbub, Bub.
\nHomer Simpson: What did I do?
\nNed Flanders: Well, I can’t say for sure, but as a Christian, I assume the worst.
\n“As a Christian, I assumed the worst.” What did he assume? That any noise represents something bad? That Homer was probably doing something wrong? Sinful? If they are laughing, or singing, or playing music, they must be doing something bad?
\nWhy is it that society, expressed through the voice of the Ned Flanders character, paints the Christian tradition as always assuming the worst? As anti-fun? As wet blankets to moments of joy? As suspicious of pleasure?
\nHave we lost something in our tradition? Have we lost track of a spirituality that is more than just restrictions and rules? More than sins and sinfulness?
\nThe Wisdom tradition thinks that we have.
\nJoin us this week as we explore our attitude to the enjoyable parts of life. As we look at a Theology of Pleasure. This is a piece of Wisdom that will truly make your summer better.
