Ep. 039 - Capt Amanda Huffman

Published: March 22, 2020, 11:16 p.m.

Amanda Huffman is a former United States Air Force civil engineering officer that attached to a United States Army Provisional Reconstruction Team for a deployment to Afghanistan in 2010. She now hosts the Women of the Military Podcast.

Amanda is the first Air Force person I've had on the show so it was interesting comparing and contrasting my former life as an enlisted Marine to her former life as an Air Force officer. Especially, since we both worked as advisors that interacted closely with our Aghan counterparts.

Amanda details the struggles of trying to succeed at the seemingly out-of-touch mission of building modern structures in an area where people live in an agrarian society that consists of sleeping outdoors and living in mud buildings. On top of the bureaucratic issues, workmanship and standards of quality differs between the two societies and project timelines suffered as a result. We also cover the effects of internal strife with a unit and how it can affect missions in a combat zone.

In addition to discussing life around FOB Morales Frazier, we describe our lives outside of the military and difficulties veterans face interacting with their civilian counterparts. Another great episode in the books!
